Before & After: Transforming a Coat Closet Into a Beautiful Bar Area

Before & After: Transforming a Coat Closet Into a Beautiful Bar Area

Some spaces in a home don’t show their full potential until they’re reimagined. This project is a perfect example. What began as a standard coat closet located just off the kitchen has now become a stylish, custom bar area that enhances both the look and flow of the main living space.

Before: A Standard Coat Closet

The original closet was practical, but it felt closed off and didn’t add anything to the surrounding kitchen and dining areas. Since the homeowners were including the renovation of the mudroom across the way, all of the coats and daily storage were relocated freeing up this valuable spot for something more functional and visually appealing.

After: A Custom Bar With Hidden Features

Once the closet was removed, the wall opened up and allowed for a fully custom-built bar area. The new design includes:

  • Beautiful custom cabinetry

  • A polished countertop

  • Open glass shelving for display

  • A modern backsplash

  • Lower storage featuring hidden refrigerator drawers

Positioned between the kitchen, dining room, and family room, this bar has become a natural gathering point for guests and an everyday convenience for the homeowners.

A Small Footprint With a Big Impact

By relocating storage to the new mudroom, this once-overlooked corner is now one of the home’s most used and admired features. It adds function, style, and a seamless connection between the main living areas, all within the footprint of a former closet.
